This editorial introduces the issue of Media Development focused on digital media literacy, cultural integrity, and digital sovereignty. It argues that digital technologies are often shaped by forms of digital colonialism, where technologies developed in the Global North are imposed on communities in the Global South. In response, the issue explores how communities are building alternative approaches rooted in local cultures, knowledge systems, and self-determination. The editorial highlights contributions that examine community radio, community networks, local digital archives, Indigenous-led technological initiatives, and the importance of critical digital literacy. Across the articles, a common theme is the need to challenge dominant technological models and support diverse, community-driven digital futures. The issue also connects these discussions to broader debates on digital sovereignty, decolonization, language, artificial intelligence, and global digital governance. It argues that more equitable and inclusive digital ecosystems will require greater local control over technologies, data, and communication infrastructures, while recognizing and valuing cultural diversity and community knowledge
